Most computers open ZIP files by themselves, but not every device, work laptop or kiosk does, and some archives arrive with odd file names that trip up Windows. This tool unpacks the archive on our server, checks it, and hands the contents back in a clean form.
What do I get back?
A fresh ZIP containing the same files, with the folder structure kept. That may sound circular, but it matters: the new archive has safe, clean file names, no hidden tricks, and it opens reliably everywhere. Browsers can only download one file at a time, so a clean archive is the practical way to hand back many files at once. Unzip it with your system's built-in tool.
What does "unsafe paths refused" mean?
A ZIP can be crafted so that its files try to land outside the folder you unpack into, for example overwriting system files. This is known as zip slip. Archives with such paths are refused outright. Characters that are not allowed in file names on common systems are replaced, and duplicate entries are dropped.
The tool also refuses archives that would unpack to more than 2 GB or more than 5,000 files. That protects against zip bombs: tiny archives that expand to enormous sizes.
Can it open password-protected ZIPs?
No. Encrypted ZIPs are not supported, and you will get a message saying so. Open those with your system's tool or an app such as 7-Zip, which asks for the password.
Which archive formats work?
ZIP only. RAR, 7z and tar archives need a desktop tool.
Is my file stored?
Extraction runs on our server. Your archive is uploaded over an encrypted connection, unpacked in Germany and deleted with the result automatically within two hours.
What are the limits?
Archives up to 50 MB are free without an account, within a daily allowance of 20 server jobs; Pro accepts 500 MB. To unpack several archives at once, drop up to 5 together for free.
