Removing a background by hand in an image editor takes careful work with selection tools. This tool uses a segmentation model, rembg with the U2-Net network, which has learned to find the main subject of a photo and separate it from everything behind it.
What kind of photos work best?
Photos with one clear subject that stands out from the background: a person, a product on a table, a pet, a car. Good lighting and a visible edge between subject and background help most. Busy scenes with several subjects, subjects that blend into a background of the same colour, and very fine detail such as flyaway hair or fur against a cluttered background are harder, and edges there may look rough or lose a few strands.
For product photos, shooting against a plain wall or sheet makes the cut-out cleaner than any tool can fix afterwards.
What do I get back?
By default, a PNG at the same dimensions as your photo, with the background made fully transparent. PNG is used because JPG cannot store transparency. Place it on a new background in any editor, slide or web page.
For marketplaces and web shops that want product photos on white, choose the white background option. You then get a JPG with the subject on plain white, ready to upload.
Does quality drop?
The subject's pixels are kept as they were. Only the mask, the decision of which pixel is subject and which is background, is created by the model, so the edges are where you may see imperfections.
Where are my files processed?
Background removal runs on our server, not in your browser, because the model is too large to download to every visitor. Your photo is uploaded over an encrypted connection, processed in Germany and deleted with the result automatically within two hours.
Is there a limit?
This is a heavy tool, so the free tier includes 3 images per day without an account and 5 with a free account, up to 50 MB each. Beyond that, each image costs one credit, or Pro removes the daily cap. Cutting out a whole product catalogue is a pipeline builder job, where you can remove backgrounds and resize in one run.
How to remove the background from an image
- Drop your JPG, PNG or WebP photo onto the drop zone.
- Choose a transparent or white background and click Remove background.
- Wait a few seconds while the model finds the subject.
- Download the transparent PNG, or the JPG on white.
FAQ
Why are parts of my subject missing?
The model mistook them for background, often where the colours are similar. A photo with more contrast between subject and background gives a better result.
Can I choose what counts as the subject?
No. The model picks the main subject by itself.
Why is the PNG larger than my JPG?
PNG is lossless and stores transparency, so it is bigger than a compressed JPG. Use Compress Image or convert to WebP, which keeps transparency at a smaller size.
Does it work on logos or illustrations?
It can, but it is trained mostly on photos. For simple logos on a flat colour, an editor's magic wand is often cleaner.
