Every image format is a trade-off between file size, quality and compatibility. Converting lets you pick the right one for where the image is going.
Which format should I choose?
JPG is the safe choice for photos. Every device, program and upload form accepts it, and files are small. It has no transparency, and it is lossy, so repeated saving slowly degrades it.
PNG is lossless and supports transparency. Use it for logos, screenshots, diagrams and anything with sharp edges or flat colour. For photos it produces large files.
WebP, the default output here, gives smaller files than JPG at similar quality and supports transparency. All current browsers display it, which makes it a good choice for websites. Some older desktop software and a few upload forms still refuse it.
GIF is limited to 256 colours and is only worth choosing for simple graphics that must be GIF. BMP and TIFF are uncompressed or lightly compressed formats that some print, scanning and legacy tools ask for. ICO is the Windows icon format; images are scaled down to at most 256 pixels. Does converting lose quality?
Converting to PNG, BMP or TIFF keeps the pixels exactly. Converting to JPG or WebP is lossy, controlled by a quality setting from 1 to 100 with a default of 85, which looks the same as the source to the eye. Converting a JPG to PNG does not restore detail the JPG already lost; it only stops further loss.
What happens to transparency?
PNG, WebP, GIF, TIFF and ICO keep transparent areas. JPG has none, so transparent areas are filled with white when you convert a logo from PNG to JPG. Photos that were stored sideways with a rotation tag are turned upright during conversion.
Does the file leave my computer?
