Rotate an image

A photo that looks fine on your phone but shows up sideways on a website or in an email is a common annoyance. The cause is usually an orientation tag: the camera saved the pixels sideways and added a note saying which way is up. Some programs read the note, others ignore it.

This tool applies that note first, so the photo starts out upright, then rotates the pixels by the angle you choose. The result looks the same in every program.

Which angles can I use?

Any whole number of degrees from -360 to 360. Positive numbers turn the image clockwise, negative numbers anticlockwise. 90, 180 and 270 are the common ones: they move pixels without any resampling, so the image stays exactly as sharp.

Other angles, such as 3 degrees to straighten a horizon, work too. The image has to be resampled, which softens it very slightly, and the canvas grows to fit the tilted picture, so the new corners are filled with background. For a straightened photo, crop those corners off afterwards with Crop Image.

Does rotating lose quality?

For quarter and half turns, the pixels are simply moved. PNG output is lossless; JPG and WebP are saved again at a high quality setting, which looks identical but counts as another save. Start from the original rather than rotating a rotated copy.

Which formats work?

JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and TIFF. The rotated image keeps its format and any transparency.
