Cropping removes the edges of an image to tighten the framing, cut out a distraction or hit a required size, such as a 1080 by 1080 square for a social post or a 1200 by 630 preview image.
How do I set the crop area?
Enter the width and height of the area to keep, in pixels. The default is 1080 by 1080.
With centre crop switched on, which is the default, that area is taken from the middle of the image. This is what you want most of the time: a centred square from a landscape photo, or a banner strip from the middle of a picture.
Switch centre crop off to place the area yourself. The left offset counts pixels from the left edge, and the top offset counts from the top. On a 4000 by 3000 photo, a 3000 by 3000 crop with a left offset of 1000 keeps the right-hand square.
To work out a size for an aspect ratio, divide: for 16:9 on a 4000-pixel-wide image, the height is 4000 divided by 16, times 9, which is 2250.
Does cropping reduce quality?
The pixels you keep are unchanged, so the crop is as sharp as the original. The image does get smaller in pixel count, so a tight crop of a small part of a photo will look soft when shown large. JPG and WebP files are saved again at a high quality setting; PNG stays lossless. Photos stored sideways with a rotation tag are turned upright before the crop, so the area lands where you expect.
What if the image is smaller than the crop?
The crop cannot extend past the edges, so you get the part that overlaps and a result smaller than you asked for. Resize the image first if it is too small.
Is it private?
