Add a watermark to images

A watermark is a small line of text on an image that says who it belongs to. Photographers use it on proofs, sellers on product and property photos, and anyone who posts pictures that tend to be copied without credit.

What does the watermark look like?

By default, your text goes in the bottom-right corner in white at 40 percent opacity and 36 pixels high, visible without covering the subject. You can move it to any corner, the top or bottom centre, or the middle of the image, and change the size, colour and opacity. Short text works best: a name, a website address, or a copyright line such as the symbol followed by your name and year.

Text size is in pixels, so 36 pixels is large on a small web image and tiny on a 6000-pixel camera original. Resize first, or scale the size to the image. On light photos, white disappears; pick a dark colour instead.

Does it protect my photos?

It deters casual copying and keeps your name attached when an image is shared. It does not stop someone determined: a corner watermark can be cropped off or painted out. For stronger protection, publish images at a modest size, say 1200 pixels wide, so the full-resolution original stays with you.

Does it reduce quality?

The watermark is drawn onto the pixels, and the image keeps its dimensions. PNG output is lossless; JPG and WebP are saved again at a high quality setting. Keep an unmarked original, because the watermark cannot be removed from the finished file.

Which formats work?

JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and TIFF. The output keeps the input format.

Is it private?

On this page the watermark is drawn in your browser. Your photos are never uploaded, so the files never leave your device.

Is there a limit?

Free, without an account or daily cap, for images up to 50 MB. Watermarking one photo at a time gets old fast; the Listing photos preset in the pipeline builder resizes to 1200 pixels, adds your watermark and saves as JPG for a whole shoot. You can try a pipeline on up to 3 files for free; larger runs use Pro or credits and are processed on our server.

How to add a watermark to an image

1. Drop your image onto the drop zone.
2. Type the watermark text and choose the position, size, colour and opacity.
3. Click Add watermark.
4. Download the watermarked image.
